"Google digital marketing course" is searched 390 times a month in the UAE alone, and most of the people typing it are looking for something that no longer exists. The Google Digital Garage course, with the certificate that carried the Interactive Advertising Bureau Europe and Open University names, is gone. What replaced it is free, still worth doing, and easy to confuse with three other Google products that share the name.
This guide sorts out what Google offers in September 2026: the Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course on Skillshop, the Professional Certificate on Coursera, the Google Ads certifications and the Google Analytics certification. We checked Google's or Coursera's own page for each on 20 September 2026 and quote only what it publishes, then cover what none of them give you and how hiring managers in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha and Beirut read them on a CV.
Key takeaways
- The Digital Garage platform was retired in early 2025 and Google can no longer issue the old certificates. The replacement is a 40-hour Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course on Skillshop that awards a badge, not the old accredited certificate.
- Everything on Skillshop, including the Google Ads and Google Analytics certifications, is free. Certifications are valid for one year.
- The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate is the paid option: eight courses on Coursera, about six months at ten hours a week, $49 a month after a seven-day trial.
- None of the four includes a live instructor, feedback on your work, real accounts, a university credential or Gulf and Lebanon market context. That is why the Google Fundamentals assessment sits inside the Talentdu PDMA rather than replacing it.
What is the Google digital marketing course in 2026?
People mean four different things by "the Google digital marketing course", and only one is a course in the everyday sense.
| Product | Where | Length | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fundamentals of Digital Marketing | Google Skillshop | 40 hours, 17 modules | Free | Skillshop badge/award |
| Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate | Coursera | 8 courses, about 6 months at 10 hours a week | $49 a month after a 7-day trial | Google Career Certificate |
| Google Ads certifications (Search, Display, Video, Measurement, AI-Powered Shopping Ads) | Google Skillshop | 75-minute assessment each | Free | Certification valid one year |
| Google Analytics certification | Google Skillshop | Assessment, learning path inside Skillshop | Free | Certification valid one year |
Google Digital Garage: what happened to it
Google Digital Garage no longer exists as a platform. The old course address at learndigital.withgoogle.com now redirects permanently to grow.google, and the original Skillshop path shows "This content is no longer available and may have been retired or replaced."
Google's Skillshop help page on the legacy Digital Garage certificate gives the timeline: users were notified on 6 February 2025, final reminders went out on 4 March 2025, and the platform went offline. Google states that "we can no longer issue or regenerate these older certificate layouts." If you finished the old course and never downloaded the PDF, it is gone. Google's advice is to take "the new, updated version of the Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course now available on Skillshop," and it describes the badge in your Skillshop profile as "the final, authorized proof of completion recognized globally."
Two practical consequences. If your CV says "Google Digital Garage certified", a recruiter who checks will find nothing to verify, so update the line to the Skillshop badge. And the IAB Europe and Open University names that made the old certificate distinctive appear nowhere on the new course page; the badge is Google's alone.
Google free digital marketing course on Skillshop: Fundamentals of Digital Marketing
The current Fundamentals of Digital Marketing is a 40-hour, 17-module course published on 10 January 2025, rated 4.6 out of 5 from 3,384 reviews at the time of writing. Google describes it as covering "current digital marketing topics, from AI tools to video marketing."
The modules run from "Build your digital marketing strategy" (2.6 hours) through customers, content, business data, social media and search, then into websites and apps, "Choose the right marketing channels for your budget" (5.8 hours, the longest module), email, video and a tour of Google's own marketing tools.
Cost. Free. Skillshop's FAQ states that "Access to the Skillshop platform, awards and most certifications are available at no cost."
What you receive. A "Badge/Award to add to your Public Skillshop and LinkedIn profiles." The course page does not call it a certificate and names no outside accrediting body.
What it is good at. Vocabulary and structure. If you have never planned a channel mix or read an analytics report, 40 hours of well-produced video and quizzes will make a job description make sense.
What it does not do. Nobody reads anything you make. The modules are video and multiple-choice: no assignment reviewed by a person, no ad account, no client, no cohort. Nothing in it explains how a Lebanese SME buys ads in a dollarized market or what a KHDA-licensed institute means to a Dubai HR team.
The Google Digital Garage category on Skillshop also lists 16 primers of one to three hours each; useful, but not credentials.
Google digital marketing certification on Coursera: the Professional Certificate
The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate is the paid, longer option and the one most people mean by "Google digital marketing certification". It is an eight-course beginner series on Coursera, listed at "6 months at 10 hours a week", with 1,532,937 learners enrolled and a 4.8 rating from 51,258 reviews when we checked. The courses run from Foundations of Digital Marketing and E-commerce through customer acquisition, social, email, analytics, e-commerce stores and loyalty, and close with Accelerate Your Job Search with AI.
Cost. Coursera lists it at $49 per month after a seven-day free trial, included with Coursera Plus, with financial aid available on application. Six months at the monthly rate is roughly $300; the meter runs on time, not on courses.
Who issues it. Google Career Certificates. Coursera's page says the program includes "over 190 hours of instruction and practice-based assessments, which simulate real-world digital marketing and e-commerce scenarios," using Google Ads, Google Analytics, Shopify, Canva, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Hootsuite and Google Search Console, and learners can earn an ACE recommendation of up to 9 US college credits.
What it does not give you. Two caveats sit on the page itself: the employer consortium is "only available in the United States at this time," and the headline $71,000 median entry-level salary is a US figure from Lightcast 2024 job postings. Neither applies to Dubai, Riyadh or Beirut. The assessments simulate scenarios rather than putting you on a real ad account with a real budget, projects are graded automatically or by peers rather than by a practitioner, and there is no live session and no university on the credential.
Free online digital marketing courses with certificates by Google: Ads and Analytics
The remaining Google credentials are product certifications rather than courses: they prove you understand a specific Google tool, not that you can market a business.
Google Ads certifications
Skillshop's Google Ads hub, headed "Free Google Ads training for every kind of advertiser", lists five certifications in 2026: Google Ads Search, Display, Measurement, Video and AI-Powered Shopping Ads, each with a free learning path in front of it.
Google Ads Help sets out the exam rules: "You will have 75 minutes to take an assessment," you need "a score of 80% or greater," the certification "will remain valid until the product area certification expires (one year)," and "If you don't pass an assessment, you can retake it one day later." Search, Display, Video, Shopping ads and Apps count toward Google Partner status for agencies.
One thing to watch: Google has started a tier of proctored professional certifications in Display, Search and Video, open to a limited audience for now, and says "In the future, these exams will require a fee." The foundational certifications remain free.
Google Analytics certification
Skillshop's help pages confirm that Google offers certifications for Google Ads, Google Marketing Platform and Google Analytics, and the FAQ's rules apply: no cost, and "all Skillshop certifications are valid for one year from the date issued, unless stated in the certificate." It covers the current Google Analytics (GA4). The 2026 course and assessment live on Google's new Skillshop platform, which only renders after you sign in, so we could not verify question counts or timing on a public page and will not quote third-party blogs; read the assessment rules inside Skillshop before you start the timer.
What these prove, and what they do not. They show you know where the buttons are and what Google calls best practice. They do not show you can take a $2,000 monthly budget for a Jounieh restaurant or a Jumeirah clinic and turn it into bookings: nobody sees your campaign structure, creative or reporting, and the exams are multiple-choice, open-book and retakeable the next day, which every hiring manager knows.
What none of the Google options include
Four things are missing from every Google option, and they are what employers ask about in interviews.
Live feedback from a practitioner. Every Google product is self-paced and machine-graded. Nobody tells you that your headline is weak, your audiences overlap or your landing page will not convert.
Work on real accounts. Simulations are not the same as launching a Meta or Google campaign, watching it fail for three days and fixing it. The portfolio a Gulf employer wants to see is the second kind.
A university or institutional credential. A Google badge tells HR you studied Google's material, not that you completed assessed coursework at a recognized institution, which many corporate HR policies in the Gulf and Lebanon screen for.
Regional market context. Nothing in the Google material covers bilingual Arabic and English campaigns, Gulf salary bands, Ramadan timing, Lebanese payment constraints or which Dubai institutes are licensed. Our UAE course guide and UAE salary guide exist to fill that gap.
How employers in the Gulf and Lebanon view Google certificates
In the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, Google's name is recognized instantly and its absence is noticed. A Google Ads Search certification is close to expected for a paid media role, and agencies chasing Google Partner status need certified staff. The certification gets you past the keyword filter; the interview then moves straight to "show me an account you ran." Free, open-book badges anyone can earn in a weekend do not differentiate candidates; a portfolio does. Dubai employers also look for KHDA licensing on local training and university-backed diplomas when the company is paying, neither of which Google provides.
In Lebanon, the market is smaller and more relationship-driven, and a recruiter is as likely to ask who taught you as which certificate you hold. The Lebanese American University's Academy of Continuing Education (LAU ACE) name carries weight across the Arab world, and Google and Meta credentials sit well beside it. What works is one institutional credential, one or two platform certifications, and a project you can talk through for ten minutes. Our guide to which digital marketing certification to get in 2026 compares LAU ACE, Google, Meta and CPD in that light.
For both markets: do the free Google Fundamentals course, add the Ads and Analytics certifications if you want paid media or measurement work, then keep going, because every other candidate can list the same three lines.
How the Google Fundamentals assessment fits inside a live program
We run the Professional Digital Marketing Associate (PDMA) Diploma with LAU ACE, so read this as our own description. The PDMA is a 12-week, 100-hour program (48 live hours, 52 self-paced), delivered live online from Beirut with select in-person sessions at the LAU ACE Office Beirut, capped at 35 seats and priced at $1,800 in US dollars, payable in two installments of $900. Live sessions run in the evening, Beirut time, which is also evening in the Gulf.
The Google Fundamentals of Digital Marketing assessment is one of five credentials graduates earn, completed online during the program alongside the LAU ACE Associate Diploma (coursework plus a final project), the Meta Certified Digital Marketing Associate (proctored exam at the LAU ACE Office Beirut, fee included) and two CPD Group certificates in Social Media Marketing and No Code Web Design. Talentdu does not sell any exam or certification on its own; every certificate is earned inside the program. The Google material is not replaced, it is surrounded: the same fundamentals, plus an instructor who reviews your campaigns, real accounts to practice on, a university credential, and a curriculum written for Lebanon and the Gulf. Details and dates are on the program page and the schedule. If you cannot spend $1,800 yet, take the free Skillshop course first; it costs nothing but time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Google digital marketing course free?
The Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course on Skillshop is free, as are the Google Ads and Google Analytics certifications. The Google Digital Marketing & E-commerce Professional Certificate on Coursera is paid: $49 a month after a seven-day free trial, or included with Coursera Plus, with financial aid available.
Is Google Digital Garage still available in 2026?
No. The platform was retired in early 2025 and its address now redirects to grow.google. Google states it can no longer issue or regenerate the old certificates. The replacement is the 40-hour Fundamentals of Digital Marketing course on Skillshop, which awards a badge.
How long does the Google digital marketing certification take?
The Coursera Professional Certificate is listed at six months at ten hours a week, with over 190 hours of instruction and assessments. The Skillshop Fundamentals course is 40 hours. Each Google Ads certification is a 75-minute assessment after a free learning path.
Is the Google digital marketing certificate recognized in the UAE and Saudi Arabia?
Google's name is recognized across the Gulf and a Google Ads certification is close to expected for paid media roles. It does not differentiate you, because the assessments are free, open-book and retakeable; employers move quickly to portfolio and experience, and companies paying for training often want a university-backed or locally licensed credential too.
Does the Google digital marketing course give you a certificate for LinkedIn?
Yes. The Skillshop Fundamentals course issues a badge that Google says you can add to your public Skillshop and LinkedIn profiles, and the Coursera program issues a Google Career Certificate that can be shared to LinkedIn. Skillshop certifications are valid for one year.
Which free online digital marketing courses with certificates by Google should I do first?
Fundamentals of Digital Marketing on Skillshop for the overall picture, then Google Ads Search if you want to run paid campaigns, then Google Analytics for measurement. All three are free. For feedback on real work and a university credential on top, a live program such as the PDMA is the next step; our Lebanon career guide lays out the full sequence.
